Who To Watch at The Breeders’ Cup®

By Darragh Farrelly | October 26, 2016

We are just over a week away from the biggest year-ending horse racing extravaganza, the Breeders’ Cup®! As the world’s best thoroughbreds descend upon Santa Anita Park, final preparations are being put in place by trainers, owners and jockeys alike as they compete in the richest two days in sports, with a total purse of $28 million on offer.

Determining the Best

Before the best can race, the best need to be determined. Getting into the prestige of a Breeders’ Cup race can be done in three ways. The first is by winning a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, “Win & You’re In”. The series of races, which are held across the globe, see horses compete for a starting spot in their selected race. The second is based on a points system, where horses are ranked based on their performance in major races during the year. The third way to gain entry is to be selected by a panel of experts.

For each race, there are a maximum of 14 horses selected for each Breeders’ Cup Championship race. Seven who come from the Challenge races and points system and seven who have been selected by the experts. This ensures the highest quality of competition.

Below, we have compiled a list of Challenge Race winners. The series culminated on October 12th at Keeneland with a win by La Coronel, booking a spot in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The Protagonists

Undoubtedly the star attraction of the entire meet, California Chrome has blown away the competition in the Challenge series, with a win in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, before blowing the field away in the Awesome Again Stakes with an effortless performance. He will start the Breeders’ Cup Classic as strong favorite, with Arrogate just behind Cal. An interesting prospect and winner of two Challenge races, Frosted, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, has two possible routes, the Dirt Mile and the Classic, with the latter the more likely to be favored. A win in the Whitney Handicap back in August proved his credentials for the weekend’s showpiece event.

Stellar Wind, who runs in the Distaff, ran and won in two Win & In races over the summer. However, she must be at her very best to outlast two-time Breeders’ Cup winner Beholder, and last year’s champion two-year old filly, Songbird.

Often a good indicator for the following year’s Triple Crown contenders, the Juvenile race is anybody’s for the taking. Classic Empire showed his worth when cruising to victory in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity. Looking to regain her crown from last year, Tepin, winner of this year’s Woodbine Mile, is a crowd favorite and one of the stars on show at Santa Anita. Elsewhere, perhaps the most competitive race all weekend is the Breeders’ Cup Turf. In a race where the Europeans have dominated, Challenge winners Flintshire and Highland Reel seem like the two to beat.
